Your views: Free School Meals.

At the British Youth Council we believe that free school meals play a fundamental role in promoting healthy eating and tackling disadvantage. Currently in England:

  • Only one in five school aged young people are currently eligible to receive a free school meal
  • 20% of children entitled to free school meals do not take them – a major reason is stigma
  • Many children who have free school meals still have to sit apart from their friends
Working with the Child Poverty Action Group, we want to gather your views on Free School Meals and what you think about these facts.

If you are aged 11 to 18, live in England, and are part of a British Youth Council membership organisation, there is the opportunity to come along to an event held in London about this important issue. During the morning, you will discuss your thoughts with other youth representatives and then in the afternoon you will get the chance to tell officials from the Department of Education (the Government department responsible for free school meals in England) what you think.

We can cover travel costs for the day and will book your train tickets. Please feel free to bring a parent/guardian/ worker with you on the day for support (we can cover their travel too but you will need to let us know). Lunch will also be provided. If you have any questions please call 020 7250 8377.

If you live in Wales, Northern Ireland or Scotland we really want to hear your views too (Free School Meals are a devolved issue). Please email campaigns@byc.org.uk and tell us about your views and experiences in your school.
